This year at my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, I want to thank all of you. You read my newsletters, the Rural California Report and download and use CIRS publications. But more importantly, you support equity in the food system. Many of you support fairness through your purchases, some of you through charitable contributions and most of you do both.
Thank a Farmer
It's easy for those of us in California to directly thank a farmer. Farmers' markets are flourishing here and every week many of us are face to face with those who own, manage and plan the farms in our region. So, next time you go to pick up those delicious winter greens or perfect pears, be sure to say "thank you" to the grower. In California, our farmers' markets are full of the men and women who actually grow our food. If you're in a CSA, write a "thank you" on the sheet you use to register that you have your weekly share. It may not seem like much but it's the least we can do.
Thank a Farm Worker
It's more difficult for most of us to thank a farm worker. We have very little direct contact with those who maintain and harvest our fruits and vegetables. But there are ways you can do that too. Tell your farmer how much you value the workers in his field. Let her know that you might be willing to pay more for your food if you knew the workers were well paid and had benefits. Support CIRS and organizations like the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.
Spend some time to understand that those who put the food on your Thanksgiving table may not have the opportunity to enjoy a similar feast. I know I will take time this Thanksgiving to think about those who grow my food.
Thank you all for your support of CIRS!
